Yanomami Presentation

During Week 6 Room 3 learnt about the Yanomami tribe who live in the Amazon Rainforest in South America. I made this presentation with my friend Jordenne and together we learnt a whole lot of another group of people. They live a very different life to us and it is very interesting learning about others around the world.

The Voice

Everyday Friday morning after assembly, Team 5 comes back to the street to get ready for the Voice. The Voice is a quiz that is read out to us by Mrs Flavelle through the intercom. Each class sits in silence and waits for "The Voice" to come with our questions. It is a fun activity that challenges us to research on the internet and find out more about what is going on in our world today.

The Voice starts off with 10 spelling words that we have to study during the week followed by 10 general knowledge questions. All the questions and spelling words are on the Team 5 site during the week so that we can study them and have the best chance of getting them all right. Everybody completes the voice and whoever gets 100% correct is shouted Sushi on Wednesday the following week.

Thinkboard Week 7 Term 4

This is the first algebra thinkboard for this year and the first Maths activity for Week 7.

Google Expedition

Image result for google cardboard

“Google Expedition, what’s that?” I thought to myself as I read the timetable for the day. The bell went and as I walked into the street, I saw 25-30 Google Cardboard spread out over two picnic tables. At first I couldn’t remember what they were called but I knew I had used them before.

During the notices, Mrs Tele’a announced that group by group, we were going to be using Google Cardboard. I remembered, the extension group went the GEGNZ Student Summit at Hobsinville Primary School earlier on this year and we had the privilege of being able to experience Google Cardboard.

My group was the second group after morning tea to experience the Google Cardboard and from watching others before morning tea go through, I was pretty excited. As we walked in, we all received a Google Cardboard to use and we were then told what we were going to do. Mrs Tele’a or Mr Clarke would pick a location and it was like we were teleported to another place.

Our first locations were in rainforests and we had to try and find certain insects or animals hidden in the leaves. The hardest one for me was trying to find the dead leaf mantis because it looked like a dead leaf and in a habitat that is mostly leaves and trees, that was pretty hard to find.

Next, we were taken to famous buildings around the world. We went to the Palace of Versallies in France and we were taken to the 43rd level of The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. At times, it was scary because it felt like we were actually that high in the sky. Lastly we went up into space and saw the earth from the other side and we went to the moon!

I enjoyed the experience and even though my neck was sore afterwards, it was fun and totally worth it! I hope to do this again soon and this time go to more places around the world!

Mr Patterson's Tips For College

Today, we had the privilege of listening to Mr Patterson and his tips for our college marathon which will begin next year. We learnt lots and I think that the things he told us will help us a lot in the next five years. We learnt that to be successful, it all starts with the right mindset. When you have a positive mindset, you will have a positive outcome, but if your mindset is negative, that's exactly what your end result will be.

We learnt about seven habits for a teenager to have to succeed.
  • Be proactive
  • Begin with the end in mind
  • Put first things first
  • Think win win
  • Synergize
  • Seek first to understand then be understood
  • Sharpen the saw
The main things that I learnt from our talk today was:
I always need to have the right mindset with everything, whether it's work, cultural, sports or anything but we just need to be and think positive. Also at the beginning of each week, it is good to list out your priorities and make sure to manage your time.

I look forward to going to starting my college marathon next year with a lot of new tips.

Thinkboard Week 4 Term 4

This is my thinkboard and first activity for week 4 of term 4. It is another subtraction problem, 4.1 - 2.873. The strategy I used was partitioning and the answer I got was 1.227

Term 4 Test Writing - A time spent with friends

“Technology, PENN, morning tea….. Fun time?! What’s that?” I wondered to myself as I read through the schedule for the day. “Miss Misela, what’s happening at fun time?” I asked eagerly. “You will just have to find out when the time comes, all you need to know is you’re going to have fun!” She replied with a smile.

“Bliiiiiinnngg!!!!” The bell rang so I walked and sat down in the street ready for morning assembly. After the notices, Mrs Tele’a walked up to the front to talk more about the “Fun Time” that was to take place straight after morning tea. Most of the people around me agreed that it was probably a test since it was the beginning of testing week. We were surprised to find that it wasn’t a test after all, it was an amazing race! I was very excited and it was on my mind for most of the morning.

It was morning tea time and I was sitting inside talking and eating with my friends when suddenly, “Yay! We are all in the same group!” My friend Josephine exclaimed. I looked up to the whiteboard to find that she was right, all of my close friends in room three were in the same group for the amazing race. Things were looking up.

As I walked back to class, I thought about the race, “What are we actually going to do? Will the activities be fun?” Lots of questions were in my head but I just had to wait and find out. I arrived outside my classroom to see Mrs Tele’a waiting, “Ok team, you need to get changed into your P.E gear and head to the street so you can get your instructions and head off.” Room 3 followed her inside and were soon in the street ready to go.

The group that I was put into was called 3A and our first activity was brain bust which was in Room 1. My group all sat down at a table waiting for instructions. We didn’t have to wait that long before we were given our questions and told, “Go, you’ve got just under 9 minutes!” Everybody grabbed a piece of paper and read it, we were pretty surprised at the questions because they were indeed very challenging.

“What is an ancient invention that we use everyday to help us see through walls?” Jordenne read outloud. “Ummm, Windows!” Jennifer almost shouted, we agreed to give it a go so Jennifer took our answer to our teacher. It was correct! Unfortunately that was the only question we got right but we were happy with one.

Photo Booth was the next activity and yes it was all about taking creative and fun pictures. We were given props to use and we had to take 4-5 shots. A smiley one, a serious face, funny expression and the last one being creative, we could do whatever we wanted. It was really fun and I enjoyed that station a lot.

Our last two activities were Cookie Face and Pea Pipes. During cookie face, you had to get a cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hands. It was very funny to watch others move their face in unusual ways to succeed. I personally didn’t get it into my mouth but three others from my group did so I was happy with that.

Our last station was pea pipes, we had to pick up a pea with a straw and take the pea to next bowl which was about three metres away. It was quite challenging because it was pretty windy and peas kept falling off and making a mess. My group were very happy because we came 1st and got 100 points for our class!

The amazing race was finished so we headed back to the street for fitness. I really enjoyed the event because we got to spend time with our friends and classmates and support each other as well as compete with them. My favorite activity would have to be the photo booth because we had to try and be creative with our poses and facials. I also enjoyed that station because it was full with laughter. I would definitely want another amazing race to take place sometime soon!

The Secret Underground

It's week two of term 4 and this is my first reading activity for the term. It is about an article called the secret underground. The article is about cave weta and other creatures that live underground where there is no sunlight. It is an interesting article and I enjoyed reading it because it reminded me that there is a whole different world underneath us.

The History of Superman

This morning in Inquiry, we learnt about the History of Superman from when he was created to now. I didn't know but he has changed A LOT! Did you know that when superman was first created, he was villain trying to dominate the world but that idea was soon changed to making him a hero trying to save the world. Further down are some facts about superman. I hope you enjoy it and learn something, I know I did!

History of Superman...
  • man of steel...red underwear or blue underwear? Why did it change?
When man of steel was first created, he was wearing red underwear on the outside but later on, DC changed it to blue underwear because they believed it looked better for the generation present.
  • Krypton - what is it?
Krypton is the fictional planet where Superman is from in the DC Comics.
  • Why was it important to Superman?
Because that is his real home and he wanted to remember the planet and his parents who died.
  • What part did Superman's parents have in his survival?
Superman's parents sent him to earth just before their home planet exploded along with Jor-El and Lara. (Superman's Parents) When Superman's Fortress of Solitude, he honored his parents by making a statue of them holding a globe of Krypton
  • Original powers? Did he fly in the beginning?
When the idea of superman was first created, he was a villain but then it was decided that he was better as a hero. He couldn't fly, only take giant jumps and he probably would have been killed by a bullet.
  • What changed in term of his super powers?
At the beginning, he could take giant jumps, run fast enough only to pass an express train and could only withstand a bullet. Whereas now, he can fly through space, run faster than light, withstand an explosion and move planets. He is definitely stronger and an better hero.
  • Daily planet - his workplace...how does he adapt between his human workplace and being a superhero?
He had to look, eat and behave like a human to prevent people from finding out who he was and where he was from. But when he changed into Superman, he had to pretend that he didn't even know Clark Kent (His human identity) and continue to save people.

Presentation Week 1 Term 4

Immersion Assembly Term 4 2015

Term 4 2015 is here and as always, it started off with an awesome immersion assembly. During an immersion assembly, teachers from each team perform a skit or show a movie to introduce what they are going to be focusing on for the term along with the school wide topic. The topic for this term is PES Survivors - outwit, outsmart, outlast.

First up was Mr Burt where he showed the school a movie he made about a fiapoko parrot who thought he was the business and annoyed everyone around him until the fiapoko parrot hunter came and killed the parrot. He was dressed up as the fiapoko parrot at assembly as well.

Team 1 is learning about animals and their habitats so of course, they are going to be visiting the zoo this term. During their item, there was a karaoke competition where volunteers from around the school competed for the winning prize. All the competitors sang to the same song of Roar by Katy Perry and passed the mic along. The winner was chosen by the school using a clap-o-meter. Marika from Room 15 won the competition and the prize of a trip to the zoo with team one.

Team 2 and 3 are learning about dinosaurs but the difference is team three is creating dinosaurs where team two is researching the history of the dinosaurs and how they didn’t adapt to their new lives and that’s why they died out and became extinct. One of the teachers from team two dressed up as barney the dinosaur to have a little fun while showing the school what their doing. Team three showed a movie after they explained their dinosaurs that they made up.

Team 4 are learning about animals and their habitats as well but their learning is probably more complex than team one’s. Team 5 teachers performed a skit for the school where the teachers were contestants on the show Survivor. They had a contest on who could finished a bowl of noodles using chopsticks. As expected, Miss Clark who is from Tibet won the competition because she knew how to use them where the other teachers from other countries didn’t.

This term, we are going to be learning about animals and people in different places and how they adapt to live their lives. I think that this term is going to be interesting and exciting and I think that we are going to learn a lot! Keep an eye out on my blog to find out what I find out this term!

Week 1 Thinkboard

This is my first learning post for Term 4 and yes, it is a maths thinkboard. In this thinkboard, the question is 0.89 + ? = 2.13. It also requires me to write 10 other similar questions and a word story problem about the question.

Spend, Share, Save

Last week in Literacy, we had the writing task to complete this presentation. In this presentation, I put in my answers to the questions provided. This is basically a plan for an explanation writing.

How do people receive and spend money?

Where do people get their money from and where does it go? Well, if someone in your household works, you will have an income, income is the money that you get. Different people spend their money in different ways, a person my age around 11-13 may be thinking about saving for something that they want or they might just want to spend it straight away. Where people who are the main money makers in their house will spend their money on more important things. In this explanation, I am going to talk about how people receive and spend their money.

For a child or young person, their money will most probably be coming from their parents or from doing small jobs around the place. When you are at that age, there aren’t many things that you need to pay for so they just spend it on whatever they want. These things include food, clothes, shoes and maybe savings for something that they want. As we get older, we think more about the bigger picture and about how we can be financially responsible.

Adults who need to provide for themselves or for other people budget their money so they can get everything they need. So there will be money for the bills, food, school fees etc. They may also put some money aside for savings but most of their money will be spent somehow to provide everything they need. It is very important for adults in this situation to be financially responsible so that their money to is spent on things they need before anything else. Another way of saying being financially responsible is getting your priorities straight.

So now you have read about how people receive and spend their money. I hope you have learnt something about being financially responsible. It is good to know how people of different ages and people in different positions spend their money.

3D D.O.C Design

Last term, in Extension we were learning about Biodiversity and how to protect endangered species. I chose the Tieke or Saddleback bird and created two designs to protect them,  one being a trap for it's predators and the other a home. In this presentation, you will see my ideas and planning and also a link to see my movie that I created about my designs.

Spend, Share, Save

This week in Inquiry, we had the activity of completing this presentation. This term for Team 5, we are learning how to be Financially Responsible which is being smart with money. In this presentation it shows my thoughts on the importance of money and savings. I think that it is very important that people save because it means you always have that extra bit of money that you can spend when you need to.

Kauri Island

Last week in Literacy, we had the task of reading the story "Kauri Island" and completing this presentation. Our main focus was making inferences which is saying what we think about the text. I found this activity a little bit challenging but over-all it was alright.

Moving Out Presentation

This is my presentation that my friend Josephine and I created. It shows what we would buy if we moved into a new house. It shows what we would buy in the sitting room and in our individual bedrooms.

$20 Tala Animation

This is my animation for Term 3. Because the theme is Trade and Enterprise and Team 5 is learning how to spend, save and share money properly, the animation is about money. It shows what I would do with $20, I wouldn't spend $20, I would save it.

GEGNZ Student Summit 2015

Our group playing a game while the news was being edited at our presentation

Google for Education Group New Zealand also known as GEGNZ had their first Student Summit this year at Hobsonville Point Primary School in Auckland. This was an event that the Year 7 & 8 Extension group attended. Because it was held in Hobsonville, we had to leave early before school around 7.15am to get there on time. The day was full with presentations, learning and lots of students.

The day was split into six parts, four sessions and two breaks for morning tea and lunch. In our groups, we were allowed to pick what session we wanted to go to. My group presented in the second session after morning tea. Our presentation was on PENN (Pt England News Network) our school news network, around 20 students attended and during the session, we showed them what PENN was and they had the chance of creating their own PENN episode. It was a fun session and I think they learnt what we wanted them to.

In the day, I learnt how to make online quizzes that you can share with friends, classmates and teachers. I learnt how to create a game using Scratch and how to take 360 degree pictures. My highlight for the day was our presentation because we got everyone in the group to participate and become part of the news. Also, we got to play games while the news was being edited which was really fun. I enjoyed the day and I would like to go to another one sometime soon.

Fair Chocolate by Renata Hopkins

Last week in Literacy, we had the activity of reading the article Fair Chocolate by Renata Hopkins and completing this presentation. The article is about fair trade businesses. Fair trade is when all the people in the line of production are payed the full amount that they deserve. Many businesses try to get as much money for themselves so they don't pay their traders the right amount. Fair trade businesses are trying to change that all over the world.

Week 4 - Triangle Addition

This is my triangle addition for Week 4. Again I filled in the gaps with the numbers that add up to 21.873.

Monday, July 20, 2015

Week 1 Thinkboardboard

This is my first thinkboard for Term 3. The question was 2.324 + 24.43 = ? My answer was 26.754. The thinkboard shows my working out, the strategy I used to solve it, a word story and 10 other similar questions. I found this thinkboard very easy but it was good because it was like a re-cap to get my brain working again after the holidays.

Week 1 Triangle Addition

This is my first triangle addition for Term 3. The lay-out is the same as all the other triangle additions that I completed in Term 2. This week's number was 12.456 and I had to write down numbers that all added up to the make 12.456. The bold numbers were already there and I wrote down the rest.

Term 2 2015 Reflection

Term 2 is coming to an end now and I am are half way through my final year at PES. Term 2 has been full of opportunities, learning, fun and for me, getting to know the people in our team (Yr 7 & 8) better. Even though, there haven’t been any really big events, I feel like this term has been great! I have especially liked our Inquiry topic, Tinkering Tools and Toys and I feel like I have learnt lots in Maths.

For the first 5 weeks of the term, Team 5 was learning about WW1 and the events that occurred during that four year period. I enjoyed that because when I have learnt about WW1 in past years, I didn’t really learn much so this was really good for me. In our Zeal Zone groups, each teacher had a different class. There was cooking, history, P.E, music and art and in every class, we learnt something new.

In the last 6 weeks, we were focusing on trying to make Pt England better. Everyone in Team 5 got in groups and created something that they thought would make the school better. My group, the Instrumentos (Which is Spanish for tools) came up with the idea to repaint our hardcourts because they don’t have much colour and we think that it would make Pt England a more beautiful place for students, teachers and visitors to our school.

Along with my normal maths class, I am a member of the Extension Maths group who are seen each Wednesday by a high school teacher from Tamaki College. At the beginning of the term, I was feeling like I was the only one not following the progression of the rest of the group but as the term went on, I understood more things and now, I can keep up with everyone else. In my normal maths class, I have learnt about pi, areas, perimeters, volume, surface areas which has been challenging but it has been good to learn all these new things.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on looking between the lines and interpreting what the author is trying to say. That has been quite challenging for me but I have enjoyed it. I have enjoyed reading different stories, poems and articles about war and other topics. I have published many presentations on my blog.

I have learnt lots this term and I have really enjoyed it. Another improvement has been doing the Koreros on Fridays at Assembly that the prefects do along with Mr Burt each week. At the beginning of the term, our Koreros were alright but they needed improving. I feel that we have improved a lot but we still have Term 3 and 4 to get better! I hope that Term 3 can be as excellent and exciting as this term and maybe even better!

Up the Pipe

Last week my literacy group, Aoraki were given the task to read the text "Up the Pipe" We then had to complete this presentation which was created by our Literacy teacher Mrs Tele'a. I found this activity a little bit tricky because a lot of the questions required me to  look between the lines to get the answer. Even though it was challenging, I did enjoy it, I think that it helped me because it made me think a lot. I look forward to more activities like this next term.

Week 11 Maths Presentation

This is my last maths activity for Term 2 2015. It is the Week 11 Presentation and this week is all about volume word problems. It is full of questions that require us to work out the volume of rectangular prisms. I enjoyed this task because, even though it wasn't as challenging as the other presentations, it gave me the chance to practice my new skill of being able to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms. I think that I am quite good at doing this now that I have practiced it. I would like to do more of this next term, even if the skill is quite easy, I would still like to do a presentation on it to practice and get used to it.

ANZAC Animation Term 2 2015

This is my animation for Term 2 2015. It is a bit delayed because I haven't had much time to put the images into imovie so I could post it on my blog. It is an animation of poppies and a ANZAC memorial that I drew from the front angle, the back angle and from the side angle. I hope you enjoy it :-)

Week 11 Thinboard

This is my thinkboard for Week 11. The question this week was to find the volume of a cube that is 9cm high, 7cm in length and 4cm in width. My answer was 252cm. If you read my thinkboard, you will see the strategy I used to solve it, a diagram of my working out, a word story problem that I have written and 10 other similar questions written by me. This will be my last thinkboard for Term 2 but I think that there will be plenty more next term!

Monday, June 22, 2015

Week 10 Thinkboard

This is my thinkboard for maths in Wk 10. This week, there was a question about adding big decimal numbers, the question was 23.345 + 3.953 = ?? I found this question easy and quick to complete but the challenge for me was making up a word problem. The thinkboard shows my working out, a diagram of my working out, a word problem that I made up and 10 other similar questions to the main question.

Thursday, June 18, 2015

Week 9 Presentation 2

This is my second think board for Week 9, I completed this with my friend Rave. It has the same sort of question as the first think board, we had to find the area and a perimeter of a triangle.

Week 9 - Maths Presentation

This is my maths presentation for this week, it is all about volume, surface area and pi. I completed this task with my friend Rave who is at the same level in Maths as me. I found this task hard because I still don't really understand surface area properly. I hope I can learn the surface area properly so this is easier.

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Future - Thinkers

This presentation is my activity that I completed for Literacy. For this task, we had to read the text Future-Thinkers by Pat Quinn and answer the questions that were given by our Literacy teacher. We were given two weeks to complete this so I also wrote about the Mobile Phone and how it started and how much it has changed since then. I enjoyed this task because we were writing what we thought the text was saying and giving our perspective on the text. I would like to do another presentation like this again.

Monday, June 15, 2015

Week 9 Thinkboard

This is the thinkboard for Week 9. It is a similar question to last weeks one. We had to find the area and the perimeter of a triangle whos base is 25 cm and sides are 15cm. We are given the dimensions and the shape and from there, we do the rest! I completed this with my classmate Rave. We solved the question and there is our working out and a diagram of our working out in the thinkboard. There is also 10 other similar questions and a word problem.

Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Week 8 - Maths Thinkboard

This is the thinkboard for this week. I completed this task with my friend Rave who is at the same level as me in Maths. The questions required us to find the area and the perimeter of a square that is 13cm by 27cm. Our answer was Area: 351 and Perimeter: 80. We worked this out by adding 13 + 13 + 27 + 27 which equals 80. (the perimeter) and 13 x 27 = 351. (area) I like using area and perimeter but I still don't understand it fully, yes I know how to find the area and perimeter of someone but if someone was to give me a question that was more complicated, I would have no idea how to solve it. I would like to learn more in that area sometime in the near future.

Friday, June 5, 2015

Week 7 - Maths Presentation Word Problems

This is my Maths Presentation for Week 7. As usual there are word problems to start with then other kinds of questions. For the first time, there are volume, area and perimeter questions to do with measurements and shapes. I found this presentation quite challenging and hard because I don't know much about measurements and volumes and haven't really been taught anything about it. I hope I can learn more about that soon so questions like these won't be as hard.

First Inquiry Session Recount

For this half of Term 2, three times a week, all the students of Team 5 will return to their home classes for Inquiry. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we only meet in the afternoon block but on Friday instead of Zeal Zone, we are in our home classes for Inquiry for the whole morning till lunchtime. The topic for this term is Tinkering Tools and Toys so we are learning about what we can do to make Pt England School better. For the first half of Term 2, we were learning about WW1 so these rotations are new to Team 5.

During the first Friday of Inquiry, we had the challenge to choose things around the school that we want to add, adjust or take away. Our first step was to get into groups of about 5 or 6. We would be in those groups for the rest of the term because we have points that are given out every session and group presentations. I got into a group with my friends before we started our first round of pictionary and charades.

After every round we would stop and talk about the word that we just acted/drew for our group. We talked about how they work and how people would do that job in the old days. For example, a dryer, everyone knows that if you put wet clothes into the dryer, they will come come out dry, but what did people used before dryers were invented? That activity made us think about what life would have been like in the 1800s and what would life be like in 2100s? If the world has changed so much since then, how much will it change in the next century?

After morning tea, groups were sent out with I-Pads to look around the school at things that could be made better. It ranged from leveling the concrete on the hard courts to planting more gardens. When we returned to the classroom, we put all our ideas into our group presentation and explained why we wanted to change them. We had lots of ideas but we finally picked our top 4 and put them into the final ideas slide.

At the end of the day, we had time to share our group’s final ideas and why we wanted them with the class. There was still more to do on the presentation but we would have time next week. I really enjoyed this session of Inquiry and I really look forward to the next one. I enjoyed learning in a group and in a fun way. Friday’s lesson made me stop and think about our school, what are the things that we could make better and is there some way we can fix it? I hope our students can do something about the things that could become better.

Week 7 - Triangle Addition

This is my Triangle Addition for Week 7. We were given a different top number from last week but the task was still the same. The numbers in bold are the numbers that were already there and the numbers in normal font are the numbers that I added in. All the numbers in each row add up to 5.283. I really enjoy triangle addition because I find it challenging to first of all find the missing number and then spilt it up into different parts. I would like to continue to do triangle addition every week because I think it helps me to get faster at adding and splitting.

The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels

Last week, in Literacy, we had the task of reading the poem, The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. We then needed to complete a presentation about the poem. I won't give away too much about them, you will have to read it yourself! I really enjoyed this task, I liked the reading the poem and writing my own inferences. I would like to do more of these activities in the near future.

Maths Presentations Week 6 Yr 8-1 and Yr 8-2

These are my last two tasks for this week, two presentations full with questions that are at a Yr 8 level. All the presentations are Division related so the questions all involved division, mainly long division. A new stragety was introduced to our maths class on how to solve long division. You will see lots of the questions in the first presentation with have the strategy format as the question, followed by word problems that involve long division. I really enjoyed these presentations because I learnt a new strategy and got to practise it a lot. Long division is definitely one of my strengths now because I can solve the questions so easily.

Here is first presentation 1: Division Year 8-1

Here is the second presentation: Division Year 8-2

Maths Task - Thinkboard

This is my second maths task for the week, it is a think board about a division question. The question was 467 ÷ 9 = ?? My answer was 51r8. I have a picture of how I solved the question and how I solved it written in one of the boxes. I wrote a word story about the question and created 10 other questions that are the same kind as 467 ÷ 9. I enjoyed this task and would like to do another one of these in the weeks to come. There will be another post on Maths either this week or next.

Your challenge is to answer my questions and put your answers in a comment below. Remember some of them will have remainders.

Triangle Addition

This is my first Maths task for this week. We are learning to use our problem solving skills and knowledge of addition to make the given number at the top of the triangle. Our number was 3.518 and we had to find out what the numbers were added up. The bold numbers were already there and the non-bold numbers are the numbers that I put in for my answer. There will be something else to do with maths later on this week for everyone to see.

Maths Presentation - Word Problems Week 5

This is this week's maths presentation full of word problems. If you have been reading my blog, you will know that each week, I have a maths presentation that I complete and post up. This presentation has questions that my maths teacher found and adjusted the numbers for my maths level.

I found this presentation quite challenging because it had questions with different components in them. Questions that require division, addition, fractions and decimals all in one! There will be another presentation next week as well.

Miss Peato Zeal Zone - Jordenne and Ana

This week in Zeal Zone, we were in Miss Peato's group learning about the training that the soldiers in WW1 did before they went to war. In this first activity, we had to create a slide with the equipment that soldiers had  with them when they went to war. I did this activity with one of my classmates, Jordenne. This is our last week in this round of Zeal Zone, I don't know what we are doing next week but I hope we carry on doing Zeal Zone in the same groups.

First World War Mascots: Animals at War

In my Literacy group, we are learning to make inferences from pieces of text. The questions in this presentation are based on the information from the article, First World War - Mascots at War. Even though the text was written for people much younger than me, the questions that we had to answer were more detailed. After finishing this presentation, I think that I have become better at finding out what the text is actually saying and finding things in the text that have to do with my life.

Mrs Tele'a Zeal Zone - ANZAC Biscuits

This week in Zeal Zone, we were in food with Mrs Tele'a. We were learning about how certain foods make us happy and how ANZAC biscuits lifted the morale of the soldiers. A cool fact that I found out was that it wasn't actually ANZAC biscuits that were sent to the soldiers, it was actually gingernuts. They didn't send ANZAC biscuits because the rolled oats would spoil before they got there. The biscuits got the name because people back home were making them at the time of WW1, not because they were sent. I really enjoyed our lesson this week and I am looking forward to next week.

Letter to Gustav Guttenbiel

This week during Literacy, we were given a task to write a letter back to one of 4 recipients that we watched on Tagata Pasifika. I chose Gustav Guttenbiel who was a Tongan-German who wanted to fight for the British Empire in WW2 but they wouldn't let him because he was German. He left his wife and children in Tonga when he was sent to be interned at Somes Island, a small island in the Wellington Harbour. Here is the video from Tagata Pasifika about his letter:

Here is my letter that I wrote to send to him if he was still alive.

Malo E Lelei Gustav,
I am writing this letter  to you, to share my thoughts and feelings  about the letter that you wrote to the NZ Government…

I have heard your story and I too agree that sending you to be interned was a great mistake. I think that it was unfair that you had to work hard and train till the day before the boat arrived, they should have let you go at the beginning of the training if they were going to send you to be interned anyway. I am so sorry that they have taken you away from your family and home when all you wanted to do was help defend the British Empire.

I want to thank you for volunteering to fight in the war even though you can’t, thank you for volunteering. If it weren’t for people like you, your home and my home wouldn’t be as it is now. I hope your letter is accepted so you can go home.

Yours Sincerely
Ana Crosser

Maths Presentation Wk 3 - Word Problems

This presentation is my maths task for Wk 3. Every week, Miss Clark creates a presentation for us to work out and post onto our blog. This week's presentation's theme was word problems. Also on my blog is Wk2 and Wk1 presentations. I found this week's presentation quite hard because the questions involved decimals, fractions, multiplication, division all in one question!

Treaty of Waitangi - Extension Movie

This is a movie that Jordenne, Josephine and I made for a Extension project in Term 1. It is about the Treaty of Waitangi, the 3Ps and how they affect our everyday lives now even after 175 years. Our task was to create a DLO, either a Google Presentation or a Movie in a group of 2-3. My group chose to create a movie based on a news report to find out what the 3Ps are and how they affect people. We hope that this movie gives you lots of information about the Treaty Of Waitangi, The 3Ps and PES.

Fractions and Percentages W2 Maths

This is my maths presentation for Week 2. It has questions about the WW1 made by my Maths teacher Miss Clark. As you can see by the title, all the questions are about fractions and percentages. There is a presentation from last week on my blog and there will be another one soon for this week.

Zeal Zone - Art Symbols

This week in Zeal Zone, we were in Art with Ms Tito. We had to find a symbol or create one to remember the soldiers who fought in the Wars, instead of having poppys, having our own symbol. I couldn't decide which one so you can let me know in the comments. :-)
I drew these flags to represent the Allies, they joined forces to protect their homes.
I drew this cross and hat to commemorate the soldiers that sacrificed their lives for their country.
I drew this letter to represent all the letters that were sent back to New Zealand with the words, "Killed in Action"

Letter to George Bollinger

This is a letter that I wrote during Literacy to send to a NZ soldier who fought in WW1 if he was still alive. If you look further down on my blog, you will see my presentation about George Bollinger. People from New Zealand treated him differently from everyone else during the time when he was alive.

Dear George,
I believe that you are now in France fighting against the Germans. I  heard about all the things that  people from New Zealand have done to you, they doubted you and didn’t believe you. I am very sorry that this has happened. I believe you when you say that you will fight for the British even though you are of German descent. I want to thank you being brave and volunteering to go back to war.Without the soldiers that fought, New Zealand wouldn’t be like it is now. Many people would agree that you are a very loyal to New Zealand no matter what culture you are.
Kind Regards
Ana, Class 3

Miss Clark's Birthday Maths Presentation

Last week in maths, we got given this presentation with questions that my maths teacher, Miss Clark created. This is my copy of the presentation with my answers included. I will have another presentation up soon with this week's presentation questions and answers.

My Dad's Graduation

Last week, my Dad graduated from Massey University. He had been going to University for three years and Massey University is the third university that he has been to in his life. The graduation was held at the Bruce Mason Theatre in Takapuna after all the graduates walked down Hurtsmere Rd. There were over 1200 graduates over the week and just under 200 during my Dad's graduation session. He graduated with a Bachelor of Accountancy which is his 3rd degree.

Even though my Dad had to study and go to lectures, we still saw him more than we did when he used to work everyday 9-5. He was able to come on school trips, camps, pick us up and drop us off at school everyday. I am so proud of my Dad for graduating, he has worked so hard to get to this point, not only studying and preparing for exams but also looking after us kids while my Mum was at work. I am going to miss seeing him so often when he gets another job as a more certified accountant.

War Story - George Bollinger Presentation

This past week, Aoraki (My Reading Group) was assigned a reading task to watch a short video about NZ soldier George Bollinger. This presentation shows my answers to the questions made by my teacher, Mrs Tele'a. George Bollinger fought in WW1 from 1915-1917. To find out more, check out my presentation :-)
