Holidays

Holidays! I have finished school. I am really excited about Christmas, Holidays and most of all, I am looking forward to spending heaps of time with my friends and family. Sadly, I probably won't be able to see my friends as much because next year, I am going to a different school.  I am going to Pt England Primary School. I am still going to have this blog and you can still get to it by entering in spxanav.blogspot.com but at the top of the page it will say something different. Have a great Holidays, a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Our time in Matarangi

This past weekend, my family and I have been in Matarangi. We went there for a friends birthday. I had a great time, but I am really tired.

We got there on Friday night at about 11.00 at night so it was straight to bed. On Saturday morning, All the kids went on a walk to the beach and back. When we were at the beach, me and a few other kids went for a swim.

When we got back, we had breakfast and started playing. In the afternoon, some people went fishing and others went for a swim at the beach. I went fishing and I caught a fish. It was my first time fishing so I was pretty happy that I caught a fish.

When, we went back to the bach, we lunch and then we went for a swim at the beach. After we had a swim, we went crab hunting. I went back before that caught any crabs to have afternoon tea and to relax.

Soon after dinner, we watched a movie and ate fondue then we went to bed. On Sunday morning, we had breakfast and we had to pack up all our stuff ready to come back to Auckland. My sister Jedida and I also rode on the scooters with a friend.

After everyone had packed and was ready to go, everyone went to Kauwatunu to jump on the bridge. When we got there, lots of people started jumping off, but it took some time for me to jump. When I finally did, I really enjoyed it and I did it another 4 times before we had to go.

Since Mum was working on Sunday night, we had to go back home early for her to get there on time. Before we started on our journey back home, we went to go for an ice-cream.

I really enjoyed that weekend and I wish that I could have stayed longer. I can't wait until we go again sometime. My favourite part was swimming on Saturday afternoon.

Letter to Mrs Wright

Dear Mrs Wright,

My name is Ana and I am in Room 3 at St Pius X Catholic School. I am writing to say thank you for your generosity and kindness.

I have really enjoyed getting Duffy Books every year. My favourite book that I got is EJ12 In the Dark. Since I got that book, I have started to read the series and of course, I really enjoyed reading it. It was my favourite book because it lead me to other books which I really enjoyed reading and I still do.

Your kindness has helped me learn new words and get better at reading. Once again, Thank you very much.

My Netbook Reflection

This year, I was very lucky and I got to use a netbook for my school work instead of a book. At first, I was very nervous and I was a bit scared because I thought that I might drop it or break it. Everyday, when I went to school, I was always very excited because I knew that I would be using my brand new netbook. I was also very unsure because I didn’t know how everything works and how to use it properly.

Now, I feel much more confident in using my netbook. I have also improved in my typing, I can now do my work much faster because I can type faster. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it is a learning tool and a learning tool only.

The really good thing that I have discovered in the year is that my hands don’t hurt as much as when I was writing in a book because my hands don’t have to be in the same position all the time. The other thing is that it is easier to do is publish because in my book, I had to write it out, type it onto the computer and then post it to my blog but now, I just need to copy and paste what I have typed onto my blog.

Sadly, there are some negatives, one of them is that to some people, it is very distracting being on the internet all day. Another negative is charging our netbooks, in our books, we didn’t have to charge our books, we just used them but now we have make sure that they are fully charged before we use them. Also, the thing that is most happens is sometimes the internet is slow and no one can do their work.

I am so looking forward to next year and using my netbook again because I think that it helps me to have better skills on computers and I think that it is much faster to do my work now. Next year, I think that I should not change any settings at all so that my netbook will be clean all the time.

The other thing that I am looking forward to next year is when I take my netbook home in the Holidays. In the Holidays, I can’t get bored because I can read online books instead of waiting until I can go to the Library. I can also post things from the Holidays onto my blog so in the Holidays whenever I get bored, I can go to my netbook.

The Lego Story

In 1932 in Billund, Swaziland, there lived a man named Oli. He was a carpenter and he had 4 sons and a wife. Sadly, his wife died but he wanted to carry on being a carpenter and provide food for his sons.

He started off making wooden toys that move. He became successful and people started buying things. Sadly one night, there was a very bad storm and the factory got caught on fire. Oli got some men to build a new factory.

Soon, Oli decided that the toys needed a name. He thought that it should be a short word. He found the word Leg Godt which meant play well. He decided to call the business Lego. Since he was alive in the early 1990’s, he didn’t have plastic pieces to start off with, they were wooden. Oli found a machine that breaks plastic.

Lego was a great success but once a man said to Godfrey that Lego toys had no system.
When Godfrey mentioned that to his father, he thought that it was a great idea so they started making small bricks that children could make things with.

Soon, Oli died and Godfrey was left to run the business, but he still kept on going even when the factory burnt down again. Godfrey kept on going and his ideas grew and grew and grew. He had his own airport in 3 years and after that, he got an idea that he was going to build an amusement park called Lego Land.

The Lego Company turned out to be a great success. Lego is still going and it is getting better everyday. We all hope that Oli is proud. The thing that I really like about the story was that Oli and Godfrey never gave up even when it seemed like it couldn’t get any worse.

Cricket Recount

In Term 4 for 4 weeks, Coach Sid came to our school to teach us kids about Cricket. He taught us how to catch the ball properly, how to hit the ball properly and how to play in a team. We learnt a lot but we still have a long way to go if we want to be professional cricket players. We went every Tuesday and we practised in the courts and on the field.

In the first lesson, we learnt how to catch the ball properly. To catch the ball properly, you put your 2 pinkies together and then spread your fingers out. Once you have done that, you put up your hands and wait until the ball is in your hands. Once it is in your hands, close your hands to make sure that you have the ball safe. You also have to follow the ball so that the ball does land in your hands.

In the 2nd lesson, we practised catching and throwing the ball. We each got a partner and stood opposite our partner. My partner was Folauhola. First we just threw the ball at each other, then we started to do different throws like only throwing with our left hand and only catching with our left hand. There were other things like that too. At the end, we went onto the field and we played a game of cricket.

We didn’t have the 3rd lesson because it was rainy and when we were supposed to have the rain day cricket, Sid had to go somewhere out of school.

On the 4th lesson, we did relays, we also played rounders and we played a game of cricket on the field. It was Coach Sid’s last time with us so he talked to us at the end for a bit before we made our way back to class.

I really enjoyed cricket and I learnt lots. I really want Coach Sid to come back and teach us some more because it was heaps of fun. My favourite part of Cricket that we] did in Cricket was when we played rounders.

My Favourite Food Rap

Mac & Cheese

I say, please oh please,
Can I have Mac & Cheese.

It’s my favourite food,
And I’m not being rude.

It’s really hot,
cause it’s from a pot.

I stop reading books,
so I can thank the cooks.

It’s the food I like,
and I eat it at night.

I won’t eat peas
so give me Mac & Cheese!

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2012

Today, the whole school went to the Manaiakalani Film Festival. There we watched short films made by school kids and their teachers. The films were held at Hoyts Cinemas at Sylvia Park so we had to catch the bus to get there.

First we got onto the bus at 10.00am. We got to Sylvia Park and 10.15am and waited until we were allowed inside. On the way in, I saw my Aunty who was helping with the Film Festival and was going to be there all day.

We were lucky because we were allowed to sit on the luxury chairs at the back. When the lights went out, everyone went, “Wow!” After that, Mr Coakley introduced the show and then it started. Our class was first and we screamed with excitement and encouragement to our presenters, Rachel and Sonya.

There were 5 other schools in the theatre with us. They were Glenbrae, Glen Innes, Tamaki Intermediate and Somerville. Glenbrae’s movies were all maori movies. Tamaki Intermediate were a mix of things. I can’t remember the others though.

After the Film Festival, we walked out together and saw Pt England waiting for their turn to go into the theatre for themselves. We kept on walking until we got to the bus where the bus driver was waiting for us.

Once we were all on the bus we all sat down and rested until we were back to school. I enjoyed the Film Festival this year, but I was really tired afterwards.

That night, I went to the night session where I saw other movies that I hadn’t seen in the day session. I really enjoyed the night session and I liked it better because I saw more movies and I was with my family and friends.

My favourite movie in the day session was Happy by Room 7 at our school. I liked it because it was unique to the others and no one else had done what they did. My favourite movie from the night session was The Test by Room 18 at Pt England School. I liked it because it was really funny and nobody had done anything like it before.

The Life Education Van

This week, the Life Education Van visited St Pius X Catholic School. Harold and Lynn are in the Life Education Van. Room 3 went on Monday and Tuesday.

On the first day, Lynn told us about the things that our body needs to stay healthy. We need food, water, exercise, love, sleep and washes. She also told us about the Food Pyramid and what foods we need to eat to keep healthy. Harold had made us a puzzle that turned out to be the Food Pyramid. Harold told us about the 3 sources of Food. The sources are food from animals, food from the ground and different kinds of ingredients.

Also, Harold had told us that he had been standing on Miss G's car with his new telescope and that he had seen an alien. Lynn didn't believe him but it turned out that he had seen one. Brain told the alien about food which also helped us with our learning.

On the second day, we looked at the human body and how the food goes down it. First, it goes into the mouth and the mouth is made up of 3 bits: teeth, tongue and saliva. Secondly, it goes down a long tube named oesophagus. Thirdly, it goes to the stomach, then it goes to into a long tube named the small intestines where it breaks up into small pieces. If the food is good, it goes to the blood, but if it isn't good, it goes into the toilet.

I had a great time at the Life Education Van and I learnt heaps.

Sportsmanship

To be a good Sportsman, you should always participate in the game and never break any of the rules. You also will need to be honest and not sulk because when you sulk, you make the game bad for everyone.

To make the games better, you should always be supportive to your team and the other team, and don't fight at any time in the game. The thing that will make you a good sportsman is if you are kind and friendly to your team mates and the other team.

Duffy Show

Today, Duffy Theatre came to our school and performed ‘Duffy and The Best Book in the World’. It was very funny and the whole school enjoyed it. The story was about....one day Duffy finds this book and the book tells him her story and Duffy goes on lots of adventures with the book and he learns how the book had changed some people’s lives.

My favourite part was when Duffy’s little brother Scruffy wanted Duffy to come outside and play rugby with him but Duffy wouldn’t so one time Scruffy came out and said that Wiri Pepu was here but he wasn’t and he meant the All Black Piri Wipu.

I really enjoyed the Duffy Show because I think that it was one of the best shows since I’ve been at St Pius X Catholic School.

My Operation

2 weeks ago, I had an operation. During that operation, I got my tonsils and adenoids out. Tonsils are the things at the back of your throat and adenoids are the things at the back of your nose.

When I went to Hospital, I had to wait for a long time and just when I was about to operate, the nurses told Mum and I that I was getting my tonsils and my adenoids out and that I had to stay off school for a week and a half. I didn't know that I was also going to have my adenoids out. I didn't want to have my adenoids out because earlier this year, a doctor told me that if I had my adenoids out that I would bleed. But I had to, so I did.

After the operation, I was feeling so tired and weak that I could hardly talk and move. The nurse took me to a room and left me there to sleep and recover. I sleep for about a hour and then I woke up and ate an ice-block. After that, I fell back asleep. For the next 4 hours, I just went to sleep, woke up again and then went back to sleep again until it was time to go home.

For the next 4 days, I was feeling really sick and yuck. I didn't get up unless I was going to the toilet and I didn't want to eat any food because it made me feel sick. Luckily on Sunday, I was feeling much better and I hardly felt any pain. The bad thing was that even though I was feeling better, the Hospital still wanted me to stay home from school.

By Wednesday, I was really bored and all I wanted to do was go to school and do something other than just sitting at home. In the weekend, I was happy because I wasn't bored because I had my brother and sisters to play with.

Today, when I came to school again, I was feeling really happy because I wasn't stuck at home doing nothing and I didn't feel sick at all.

My Favorites

My Favorites

My favorite place in my house is the dining room table. It is my favorite place because at that table, my family and I play games there,

we create amazing things, and yes, we actually made it!

.
and we talk there.
I've got lots of happy memories of talks and happy times at our table. It is the thing that reminds me the most of the good things that have happened at my house.

My favorite thing in my house apart my family is my flower. It is my favorite thing because I made this flower in Australia with my cousins, Tamakaha and Aroha. I hardly ever get to see them and this flower reminds me of them and  the time that I had with them

Term 3 Reflection

Learning Journal

Being a successful learner involves you being reflective about the learning process. It is about you identifying your strengths, weaknesses and areas you would like to improve in. Reflection just does not happen at the end of a task, it can be throughout a task.

I would now like you to take some time to answer these questions:

1. Are you pleased with how this term has gone for you?
Yes because I have learnt a lot of things and I have become a better learner this term.

2. What have you learnt this term?
I have learnt how to make a book of my own online.

3. What have you found easy this term?
I found researching Sarah Walker and putting my information into a Google Presentation because I have done a lot of Presentations to practise.

4. What have you found tricky / difficult this term?
I found drawing my symbols for Room 3’s Sacraments art piece hard to do because I am not very good at art and that time I had to do 8 symbols.

5. Who  / what has helped you with your learning this term?
My Mum has helped me a lot but the person who has helped me the most was Miss G.

6. What could you change with your learning for next term?
Next term, I am going to try to not daydream and stay focused on my work more.

7. What are your next learning steps to make you a successful learner for next term?
My learning steps are going to be:
I will always finish my work when I am supposed to and I will listen to Miss G and always read the question before I put in the answer.

Kids 4 Kids

“Okay, we can go now.” Miss G said to the Bus Driver. The whole bus was buzzing because we were going to the Kids 4 Kids rehearsal. We had been practising for Kids 4 Kids for nearly a whole term. Rachel and I were extra excited and scared at the same time because we were auditioning for the soloist part. “Quiet down Room 3!” shouted Miss G over all the noise.

When we got there we had to line up in one line in height order then follow the man inside. The concert and the rehearsal was at the Telstraclear Centre in Manukau. When we were inside the theatre, we sat down and waited for the man to start talking to us. After a few minutes of waiting he started to tell us where to sit. I ended up in row 4 sitting next to Aurora and a girl from another school. Soon Suzanne came out and we all started to sing.

After we had practised most of the songs, we had morning tea and the soloists went under the stage to audition. Rachel and I were shaking as we walked down the many stairs that there were. When we were down there, the man asked us to stand in a line and sing the first bit of “When you wish upon a star” My Mum told me to go for that song that I should go for so I was pretty happy that I was singing that. Luckily I made it through the first round but after that, I didn’t know weather I would be able to stand up, I was shaking so much in my legs. Soon he sent a group upstairs. I was so happy that I made it through that round. I nearly fell over we I heard that we had to sing some more. I sang and soon he gave us the results. I couldn’t believe it, I made it!!!!!!! I was one of the soloists!!!!!! And so was Rachel! We were so happy! Next we had to sing some more to see who sang what song. It ended up to be Rachel and I were singing the same song together! We ran up the stairs nearly screaming!

We ran across the stage to where Miss G was standing. “How did you go?” She asked. “We made it! We are doing the same song together!” I replied happily. She gave a big hug and congratulated us. Mrs Carter came running when she saw Miss G looking so happy.

Soon it was time to get back onto the stage to carry on with the practise. When it was time for me and Rachel to do our song, I was scared and really excited at the same time. For some reason, I could hear myself really loudly. I sing at church sometimes but I had never heard myself sing so loudly!

I went home and got ready for the big night. I told my Mum, Dad and my brother and sisters and I called my Aunty in Tauranga to tell her and my cousin. Everyone was very happy and proud and they all wished me luck. Finally, it was time to go. In the car, I kept on getting really scared then be fine and do it again and again the whole trip.

When I was backstage with the rest of the class and Miss G, I played knucklebones with Rachel, Jane, Caroline and Catherine. It was my first time playing and I was really bad at it. Soon Miss G told us to get into the rows that we were in at the rehearsal. Rachel and I were really scared but I was really excited as well.

Soon we were sitting on the benches waiting for Suzanne to come out and start singing with us. First we sang the Muppet Show Theme song with some changes, I thought that it was a great way to start the night. Next was the Happy Days Theme song. Happy Days was the name of the Show so Suzanne talked a bit about the song before we sang it.

After some songs it was finally time for Rachel and I to sing. For some reason, I wasn’t scared at all when I was walking up to the microphone. I waited till Rachel’s verse was over then it was my turn to shine! I sang and sang and soon it was over. We went to sit down again and carry on being part of the choir.

For the rest of the night, I sang and sometimes I did little actions, but soon I got tired and I hardly did anything. After the concert was over, Miss G took me over to my Mum and my sister, Talita in the foyer. Mum congratulated me and said that I was great. I was really tired, I could barely smile! On the way home, Talita fell asleep and I nearly did too and when we got home, I fell asleep straight away.

I really enjoyed singing in front of people with Suzanne Prentice. I was also really happy that it was over because our class had been practising for it for so long. My highlight of the night was singing solo and seeing my Mum and Miss G smiling. My highlight of the rehearsal was finding out that I had the soloist part with Rachel.

Last night was St Pius X Catholic School’s Musical Evening. It was a night to show our parents what we can do with Music. Every class performed an Item and some Music groups performed as well.

The first Class to perform was Room 2. They sang a song as an opening prayer. Second was the Room 7 girls with a Maori Song and dance. Room 1 was next with a stick song that they learnt with Mrs Carter. Third was both Room 1 & 2 with a song and dance. I thought that they opened the evening really well.

The rest of the evening was mostly singing and dancing. There was an Item that the Drumming group did, it was really cool, but it was really loud. The thing that made it worse was that everyone was cheering loudly, so it made it extra loud.

Soon, it came time for Room 3 to do their Item. We were singing 2 songs, “Puppet on a string” and “Somewhere out there”. In Puppet on a String the whole Class sang the whole song but in Somewhere out There, Rachel and I sang the soloist part.

I was a bit nervous when I held the microphone up because so many eyes were staring at me. As we started singing the cheering started. When the song had finished Room 3 all bowed and went back to their seats and sat down. I felt relieved and a bit proud of myself because I had finally did it.

For the rest of the Evening, I just wished that I was at home in bed. At the end of the evening, I went to my Mum and Family and we went home.

I really enjoyed the Musical Evening but I was really tired and I wanted to go home straight after Room item.

X Country

“Go Talita!” I cheered as my sister, Talita ran. It was XCountry Day and the 7 year olds were running. Talita was close behind her friend Lenleigh and she was coming second! Her course was to run around the school and the church twice and then run around the courts once at the end. At the very end of the race Lenleigh started walking, so I shouted to Talita, “Run past her!!” So she did and she won the race. For some reason when Talita sat down, someone was already sitting down. I don’t know what happened there but I think that Talita actually won.

Talita’s race wasn’t the first race though. First, it was the 5 year old boys and girls and Jorge won the boys race and Helaina won the girls race. The 6 year old boys were next and Alan won the boys race and Mikala won the girls race. After that was Talita’s race.

When the 8 year olds had finished, the 13 year olds started and after that the 12, 11, 10 and finally the 9 year olds.

I am 9 so I was really nervous when the 10 year olds were sent off. When we got called up I waved to my Mum and got ready to race off. “On your marks, get set, Go!” called Miss G. I started by jogging because I was running a long way and I didn’t want to get tired right away.

I wasn’t at the front but I wasn’t at the end. Soon, I saw the first teacher and she helped us cross the road safely. The next teacher also did that. The third teacher, Mrs Tui told me to run around the side street. In that street, I saw a lot of people cheating so I tried to tell them to come back, but I was so out of breath, I could hardly speak. I was so tired and I wanted to sit down but I kept on going. The thing that was really hard was running up the hill at the end.

In the end, I came 5th, but I was really proud of myself for trying and finishing. I had an awesome time that day and I was really proud of Talita and me.

Apple Desrciption

Apples are very nice and we all love to eat them. There are two kinds of apples: red and Green apples but today, I’m going to talk about green apples.

The Granny Smith apple is as round as a ball with a stick at the top. When you eat an apple, you hear a crunchy sound like when you are eating a chip. It smells fresh, especially if it has been in the fridge for a while.

If you run your hand around it, it is as bumpy as a ride on a bumpy road, and at the bottom it is prickly. One of the reasons, people really like apples is because they are so juicy, sometimes it’s like there’s juice coming out of it. It is as sweet as a lolly and really, really yum.

An apple is normally found either in a fruit bowl/bucket, in a fruit truck, in the shops or hanging from an Apple tree. Apples are normally one of the things that people eat when they are trying to lose weight because it is really healthy and it makes you strong. Also because it is full of Iron.

Apples are really good for desserts, pies, fruit salads and for making juice. It is a common fruit that nearly everyone loves because of its taste and when and where it grows, also because it is not expensive.

Apple’s have a really unique taste and we are all very happy to have them. People have a saying, “An apple a day, keeps the Doctor away” because of all the things that an apple does and because of its awesome taste!

Olympic Torch Description

The Olympic Torch is lit at every Olympics Opening Ceremony and it stays lit for the whole time the Olympics are going.

The Torch looks amazing and pretty. It is very bright the petals in the Torch are very long. The Olympic Torch is made out of Copper Metal and it is very hot because it is run by gas.

The Olympic Flame is lit at the Opening Ceremony but before it is it goes to every country on a plane and then it is lit at the country that are hosting the Olympics that year.

When the Flame is lit it shows us that the Olympics have started and at the end of the Olympics it is put out so that the people know that the Olympics have finished.

The Torch is made up of petals. Each petal is held by every country before they are all put together to make “The Torch” The Torch is also a symbol of the Olympics. When it is lit the Olympics are on and when it is out the Olympics are not on.

The Flame is really special because it is only lit when the Olympics are on and the Olympics are only on every 4 years.

I think that the Olympic Torch is really unique and it makes you whisper, “Wow!” every time you see it because it is really pretty.

Netbook Description

I use my Netbook to help me with my learning and it is very special to me.

My Netbook is shiny, rectangle, mini and black. If I lift up my Netbook, I can hear a ssshhing sound coming out of the bottom. When I log on to my Netbook after it has been shut down it makes a ‘dan dan’ sound. My Eee pc Netbook is smooth on the top and rough on the bottom. It is light to carry and warm when I have used it lots.

My learning tool is normally in my classroom and at night in a C.O.W (Computers on wheels) to charge. When I take my netbook home it is either in my bag or in my hands while I do my work.

My Netbook helps me to learn lots and gives me lots of information from the Internet. It allows me to get onto the Internet and it is a great learning tool.

I use my Netbook for my work. When I am using my Netbook I have to make sure that I am cybersmart when I am on the Internet and be responsible when I carry my Netbook.

I think my Netbook is really special to me because I am one of the first people in New Zealand to have a Netbook for my school work and because I really enjoy doing my work in a different way.

My Netbook is a learning tool and another way to get onto the Internet. I need to remember to be responsible and cybersmart whenever I use my Netbook.

Smart Legal

Today we looked at what being Smart Legal is.

I am 9 years old and I am not allowed to own a  Facebook account, Bebo account, Twitter account, and any kind of Google account. Also I am not allowed to download things that aren't mine, copy and paste other people's work and take random screen shots.

The reason why I am not allowed to own a Facebook account, Bebo account, Twitter account and any kind of Google account is because I am under age. Downloading things, copying and pasting things and taking random screen shots are all against the law.
