Kids 4 Kids

“Okay, we can go now.” Miss G said to the Bus Driver. The whole bus was buzzing because we were going to the Kids 4 Kids rehearsal. We had been practising for Kids 4 Kids for nearly a whole term. Rachel and I were extra excited and scared at the same time because we were auditioning for the soloist part. “Quiet down Room 3!” shouted Miss G over all the noise.

When we got there we had to line up in one line in height order then follow the man inside. The concert and the rehearsal was at the Telstraclear Centre in Manukau. When we were inside the theatre, we sat down and waited for the man to start talking to us. After a few minutes of waiting he started to tell us where to sit. I ended up in row 4 sitting next to Aurora and a girl from another school. Soon Suzanne came out and we all started to sing.

After we had practised most of the songs, we had morning tea and the soloists went under the stage to audition. Rachel and I were shaking as we walked down the many stairs that there were. When we were down there, the man asked us to stand in a line and sing the first bit of “When you wish upon a star” My Mum told me to go for that song that I should go for so I was pretty happy that I was singing that. Luckily I made it through the first round but after that, I didn’t know weather I would be able to stand up, I was shaking so much in my legs. Soon he sent a group upstairs. I was so happy that I made it through that round. I nearly fell over we I heard that we had to sing some more. I sang and soon he gave us the results. I couldn’t believe it, I made it!!!!!!! I was one of the soloists!!!!!! And so was Rachel! We were so happy! Next we had to sing some more to see who sang what song. It ended up to be Rachel and I were singing the same song together! We ran up the stairs nearly screaming!

We ran across the stage to where Miss G was standing. “How did you go?” She asked. “We made it! We are doing the same song together!” I replied happily. She gave a big hug and congratulated us. Mrs Carter came running when she saw Miss G looking so happy.

Soon it was time to get back onto the stage to carry on with the practise. When it was time for me and Rachel to do our song, I was scared and really excited at the same time. For some reason, I could hear myself really loudly. I sing at church sometimes but I had never heard myself sing so loudly!

I went home and got ready for the big night. I told my Mum, Dad and my brother and sisters and I called my Aunty in Tauranga to tell her and my cousin. Everyone was very happy and proud and they all wished me luck. Finally, it was time to go. In the car, I kept on getting really scared then be fine and do it again and again the whole trip.

When I was backstage with the rest of the class and Miss G, I played knucklebones with Rachel, Jane, Caroline and Catherine. It was my first time playing and I was really bad at it. Soon Miss G told us to get into the rows that we were in at the rehearsal. Rachel and I were really scared but I was really excited as well.

Soon we were sitting on the benches waiting for Suzanne to come out and start singing with us. First we sang the Muppet Show Theme song with some changes, I thought that it was a great way to start the night. Next was the Happy Days Theme song. Happy Days was the name of the Show so Suzanne talked a bit about the song before we sang it.

After some songs it was finally time for Rachel and I to sing. For some reason, I wasn’t scared at all when I was walking up to the microphone. I waited till Rachel’s verse was over then it was my turn to shine! I sang and sang and soon it was over. We went to sit down again and carry on being part of the choir.

For the rest of the night, I sang and sometimes I did little actions, but soon I got tired and I hardly did anything. After the concert was over, Miss G took me over to my Mum and my sister, Talita in the foyer. Mum congratulated me and said that I was great. I was really tired, I could barely smile! On the way home, Talita fell asleep and I nearly did too and when we got home, I fell asleep straight away.

I really enjoyed singing in front of people with Suzanne Prentice. I was also really happy that it was over because our class had been practising for it for so long. My highlight of the night was singing solo and seeing my Mum and Miss G smiling. My highlight of the rehearsal was finding out that I had the soloist part with Rachel.

  1. What an absolute, fair dinkim, genuine pleasure to read this story Ana. I was SO proud of you too - you were such a STAR!
And you have also written a brilliant recount of your experience. I can see how much your writing has improved over this year - and it was already pretty amazing to begin with!
    Love you much. Mum.
