Lyttelton Tunnel Anniversary Article (By Me)
Why has the Lyttelton tunnel been in the news recently?
It is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary.
Lyttelton Tunnel celebrated their 50th anniversary on the 27 February 2014. The Lyttelton Tunnel was built in 1964. The Lyttelton Tunnel was built over 3 years and spent most of the time using 250 kilograms of of explosives to mark out where the tunnel would be. It was a big celebration which was celebrated in the tunnel in Christchurch.

Treaty of Waitangi - Explanation
On the 6th of February 1840 in Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands there was a treaty being signed. It was between the Maori people and the British people. There had been British settlers staying New Zealand for some time, but unfortunately some of the immigrants started to act badly. This agreement was made to solve all of their problems and make more peace in the land of New Zealand.
The treaty was written in two different languages which meant two different meanings. When the British signed it, they thought that they would be the leaders over the land. But when the Maori signed, they thought that they were the ones who were going to have power. There was a lot of misunderstanding between the two cultures which lead to wars.
The treaty was written by James Busby, a British representative of the queen and was translated by missionary, John Williams and his son. There were lots of Maori chiefs who didn’t want to sign it, but were convinced and eventually signed. There were three parts to the treaty, Protection, Partnership and Participation. Those three P’s are still characters today in our lives at school and everywhere else.

The Pt England Way - Explanation
In our school, we have the Pt England Way. The Pt England Way shows attitudes and behaviours that are expected at our school. We get a new korero each Friday at assembly to work on, those add to the Pt England Way. Korero is the Maori word for talk, it is also used as the word for saying or phrase. The Pt England Way started a long time ago when it used to be called Belonging to Pt England.
Belonging to Pt England started in 2001 by the teachers at the school and Mr Burt, one of them was Otalani Melesia, one of the teachers at the time. It was changed later to to The Pt England Way. Mr Burt, our principal and our prefects are the ones who write the koreros now. It also makes us happy when we listen to them. When we listen to the koreros and the Pt England Way, we can learn better and get along with everyone as well. It also helps our teachers when we behave, it makes it easier for them to teach us.

Not Long till School again
There's only one more day of Holidays left and it has actually gone pretty fast. I am half looking forward to school, half not. I am excited because I can get back to learning and I can see my friends again, but I am not looking forward to waking up early in the morning, going to sleep early and actually thinking properly. Another reason for not being excited is I am going into intermediate and I am not sure if I should be excited or nervous.
I have really enjoyed my holidays. I have been to Tauranga (For Christmas), Paihia (Also for a family Christmas) and Parachute music festival which was AWESOME!! The whole family camped there for the weekend and got to hear lots of cool as artists.

Holiday at Paihia
For the past 5 days, I have been in Paihia, which is a small town in the Bay of Islands. I went with my family from my Mum's side. We all stayed in a church and sleep on mattress on the floor. I had a great time there and I really wished that it could have been longer.
On the first day, we just settled in, set up our beds and had our present time from Christmas since we hadn't already done it. My favourite part from that day would have to be throwing down the mattress from upstairs and seeing everyone.
The next day we went to the amazing Waitangi. We had a great time and when we went into the meeting room for the special performance, my Dad got picked as the chief. It was the best one that I had ever been to. It was also cool because we saw my Aunties from my Dad's side there.
Wednesday was really cool, at 9.00am we all walked down to the wharf and waited to get onto the ferry. We were going on a trip to the famous Hole in the Rock. It was a awesome experience because not only did we get to see the Hole in the Rock and all of the Bay of Islands, we got to actually stop at one of the islands and we also got to see lots of dolphins jumping next to us, it was great!
Thursday morning, we all went down to the field to play some games. We got into groups and played games like sack race, egg on spoon and stuff like that. That was cool until it started to pour down with rain. That afternoon the kids went down to the circus. My brother, my cousin and I didn't enjoy it so we went to have ice-creams instead.
The last day wasn't cool because we were leaving, in the morning we went to the beach and then we started to pack up. It was only my family who had to leave but the rest stayed for another night, we had to go because my Mum had to go to work. On the way back to Auckland, we went to a fish and chips shop which had the biggest hamburgers, so big that I couldn't eat them and the biggest ice-creams! I got a kiddie cone and it was still big! We also got to go and see some of our friends in Ruakaka which was cool.
I loved my holiday in Paihia. My favourite thing about it was the ice-creams, the family and the trips to awesome places. I am looking forward to my birthday as well in 3 days and it's cool because some of my cousins are coming to my house to stay for a week.
